Much in the vein of inventive musicians like Frank Zappa, Nelson Heise isn't content to find one musical groove and ride it for all it's worth, instead he prefers to push the musical envelope and venture into new and uncharted musical ground.

Nelson is part of several groups including, The Hits & Mrs., Munkey Juice, The Heise Bros and his Amish, rock porn-star inspired persona Jebediah Goodthrust.

Ashes of Bridges is Nelson's latest project from his Hits & Mrs. group that also includes fellow musicians, Bubba and V. Stak. The group started as a studio band with plans of releasing one or two CDs a year but things got bogged down so Ashes of Bridges is made up of songs that have been recorded over the last three years.

Ashes of Bridges includes 12 songs that range from folk to alternative rock in style. I also heard a retro 60's/early 70's pop rock vibe that seemed to be a common thread that run through several of the songs found on this release.

"Cold, Cold Days," gets things rolling with its simple acoustic guitar and harmonica filled start as the song develops into a folk rock number. This song was also one of the highlight tracks for me.

Other highlight tracks included, "Spin Around," a 60's pop rock sounding up-tempo song that offers up some interesting vocal effects along with nice electric guitar and keyboard parts. The track, "Let's Let It Ride!," has a deep vibe found on it thanks to the hard edged alt. rock style used on it. "My Poor GrammEr," is interesting in that it starts out life as an alt. rock song but ends up as a fast paced punk rocker.

Ashes of Bridges also finishes off strong with the tracks, "Out of My Life," and "Alone Forever," both song tie together with the theme of getting out of a bad relationship and the peace and tranquility that comes from being alone.

Ashes of Bridges is a solid release that should work well in continuing the musical journey of the band The Hit & Mrs.
